Until about a year ago I could have counted the number of collages I had made on one hand, but lately I find myself gravitating to that medium more and more. I have always enjoyed the collage and photomontage work of Hannah Höch, Georges Grosz, Aleksander Rodchenko, Raoul Hausmann, Kurt Schwitters and Nancy Spero to name a few, but I had never felt the pull myself. I think what happened was that I really hit my stride as a draftsman over the past year or so and find that I can draw just about anything in just about any style I want with little effort. The practice of scavenging materials from other sources to fit my concept, or responding to striking found imagery, is a completely different beast. It combines the thrill of the hunt and the challenge of creating in dialogue with an absent other. There is something intellectually engaging, and additionally satisfying, in a piece for which I walked the edge of failure from the beginning to the end.
